Presentation

In collaboration with the Lebanese Ministry of Culture, Dar Al Ud at Philokalia Institute presents the first International ‘Ud Competition from the 19th till the 24th of September 2022. It aims to provide a space for musicians interested in the ‘Ud instrument and its various schools, hoping that this competition will be a motivation for a fresh start, especially during the critical circumstances in the MENA region.

FIRST ROUND

High resolution video recordings to be sent to daralud@philokalia-lb.com between June 1 and June 15, 2022. Results to be announced at the beginning of July 2022.

SECOND ROUND

September 20, 2022 at Philokalia Institute – Aintoura, Lebanon. Results will be announced in the evening of the same day.

THIRD ROUND

September 23, 2022 at Philokalia Institute – Aintoura, Lebanon. Finals results will be announced on September 24, during the prizes and awards distribution ceremony.

3. Improvisation on one of the following maqams:
Rast, Hijazkar or Bayat

⦁ Fantasy No. 4: Tawfiq Al-Basha

2. One Sama’i of the following:
⦁ Sama’i Nahawand: Massoud Jamil.
⦁ Scenes of the Bosphorus under the moonlight: Cinuçen Tanrikorur.

3. A piece of the competitor’s choice (8 hard copies to be presented to the jury members)

4. Rhythmic improvisation based on one of the following rhythms:

Aqsaq Turki (Thurayya), Dawr Hindi, Aqsaq, or Jurjina
and on one of the following maqams:
Bastanikar, Shahenaz, Yaggah, Farahfaza, Nakriz, or Rahet Al Arwah
(5 minutes maximum, including at least four Maqam modulations)
